Southern Theatre and Arts Supporters (STARS) are no more.

A non-profit organisation run by volunteers whose aim was to support and promote the development of the arts in the southern region and Fleurieu Peninsula of South Australia, STARS was officially wound up at what proved to be their last AGM recently.

STARS was based at Waverley Homestead, St Peters Terrace Willunga, for sixteen years but in 2016 relocated to the Willunga Rec Park. STARS presented regular artistic and cultural events such as operas, concerts, art exhibitions, workshops and open days, and liaised closely with local and other community organisations and groups, schools etc. to encourage participation in the arts and cultural activities by younger and older people.

Over the years, STARS has been able to liaise with Co-opera, the Helpmann Academy, the SALA Festival and The Fringe to co-present many concerts and events and most importantly award talent with financial assistance. STARS has donated in excess of $2,000 on a yearly basis in the form of grants and award to artists and performers to assist and encourage their development both in South Australia and overseas.

Additionally, the group took a very active role in local events and in promoting the township of Willunga, South Australia.

The McLaren Vale Regional award and various citizen awards were given to STARS and its members for service to the community and excellence in the Arts.

Coastal Views extends its sincere thanks and appreciation to the Management Committee – Carolyn Colling, Peter Elder, Wayne Anthoney and others – for their excellent work in running STARS for the past decade and more.

To give you an idea of the broad repertoire of STARS, we publish below the final Chairperson’s Report from Carolyn Colling.

ADELAIDE YOUTH ORCHESTRA SEPTEMBER

THIS EVENT HAD BEEN ON THE STARS AGENDA FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS AND FINALLY IT CAME TO FRUITION – A PERFORMANCE THAT I ATTENDED AFFIRMED THE QUALITY AND PASSION OF THESE VERY YOUNG MUSICIANS AND I LIAISED WITH ADYO AND TATACHILLA COLLEGE IN ORDER TO ALLOW AUDIENCE MEMBERS IN OUR REGION TO ENJOY A CONCERT.

THE PROGRAMME FEATURED CARNIVAL OVERTURE, A BASSOON SOLO AND THE WONDERFUL TCHAIKOVSKY SYMPHONY NO. 5.

UNFORTUNATELY THE AUDIENCE NUMBERS WERE DOWN BUT THE ORCHESTRA MEMBERS WERE TREATED TO OUR USUAL HOSPITALITY AND WERE APPRECIATIVE OF THE OPPORTUNITY TO PERFORM IN MCLAREN VALE.

BIG SING – TATACHILLA STADIUM

PETER COLLING DEVISED THEMES AND PHOTOS WHICH WERE COMPILED IN A CALENDAR AND LOCALS WERE ASKED TO ENTER A CAPTION COMPETITION WITH GREAT PRIZES TO BE WON. THIS VENTURE RESULTED IN RAISING OVER $10,000 FOR WILLUNGA REC PARK.

MUSICA VIVA – EQUAL MUSIC PROGRAMME

OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS, STARS HAS PLEDGED $5,000 TO THIS PROGRAMME TO ENABLE LOW ADVANTAGED SCHOOL, I.E. ALDINGA BEACH PRIMARY, TO ENJOY MUSIC PRESENTATIONS BY VARIOUS PERFORMERS AND MUSICIANS AS PART OF THEIR EDUCATION, AS WELL AS LEARN A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT.

STARS COMMITTEE IS PROUD OF OUR INVOLVEMENT WITH THIS PROGRAMME AS IT IS FULFILLING ANOTHER LONGSTANDING AIM TO SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGE MUSIC/PERFORMANCE IN OUR REGION.

I AM VERY PROUD OF THE QUALITY OF PERFORMANCES THAT STARS HAS CONTINUED TO OFFER OUR COMMUNITY SINCE 2001 WHEN I JOINED OLIVE READERS COMMITTEE AND BECAME CHAIR IN 2007.   IT IS TIME FOR ME TO MOVE ON AND TRUST THAT THE BRILLIANT MEMORIES WILL REMAIN WITH US ALL. THANKYOU TO EVERY MEMBER OF MY FORMER COMMITTEES, CURRENT COMMITTEE, VOLUNTEERS, AUDIENCE, PERFORMERS ETC. FOR ALLOWING ME TO ENJOY MY PASSION TO PRESENT THE ARTS IN OUR REGION. IT HAS BEEN MY PLEASURE.
