All around the world. people line up on their local beaches every May to show their support for marine protection. The Hands Across the Sand campaign began in response to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill disaster of 2010. Locals gathered on 8 beaches in South Australia last year, including at our own Pt Willunga and at Middleton and Brighton.
They’ll do it again this month at 11am on Sunday morning on May 5th. There will be singing, and drumming and yes some very short speeches from supportive politicians.
The campaign to stop seismic testing and oil drilling in the Great Australian Bight is the focus of Hands Across the Sand in SA. In our region the event is being organized by a local residents group. The Wild South meets fortnightly in Aldinga and they have a facebook page. You can also contact them at firstname.lastname@example.org
