Coastal Views recently spoke to the organisers of Stone Pony, a community-based music venue in Willunga. Here’s what they had to say.

What is it?

It is a music venue.

Where is it?

In Willunga – at the old Show Hall on Main St. (opposite the Alma)

What is it about?

It is a ‘not for profit’ facility which is about original music – of any genre.

Who plays?

Singer songwriters/composers (soloists, duos, trios, full bands) from not only S.A. but also those touring from interstate.

How often does this happen?

Once per month – usually the 2nd Saturday night of every month. This can vary due to a range of factors which include hall availability and available dates for touring performers.

How long has this been going on?

Three years last month. It’s a continuation of original music that has been staged in Willunga for about 10 years at both the Acoustic Peacock and Fernies.

How is it structured?

Double bill – two 50 minute sets. Occasionally a main act and a support act.

What does it look like?

The hall is set up in cabaret style with tables arranged according to the number of people making up table groups. Lamps, candles, and overhead fairy lights create Stone Pony’s unique ambience. The performers are on the stage which is also decorated.

And the sound?

Provided by Corey Thornton of ‘Sound Core’.

Who does all this?

A small planning team consisting of Jen and Tobin Lush and Jen’s dad Dave Greenslade – helped enormously by an ever growing band of volunteers, many of whom have been with S.P. from the outset.

Is it a BYO venue?

No. There are bar facilities (local beers and wines) and food is available.

How do I find out about all this?

Various ways. On line: Stone Pony.live; Facebook; Bookings: ticketebo.com.au; Community radio; posters (mainly in Willunga and McLaren Vale); ‘Discover Willunga’ mag and in future ‘Coastal Views’; through ‘mail chimp if organisers have patrons’ email addresses; and of course word of mouth ( the most effective).

How do I book a table?

Phone Dave at 0405130910 or email plum@bigpond.com.

Are there concessions?

Yes

Wheel chair access?

Yes

What’s on next?

On Sat July 6th starting at 8pm (doors open at 7) – Skyscraper Stan and his band on national tour promoting his new album “Golden Boy Vol 1&2” (check them out on line); supported by highly regarded local Adelaide singer songwriter Elli Belle. Prices $25/$20 (early bird on ticketebo).
