Friends, family, supporters and true believers turned out in force in Willunga today for the campaign launch of local environmental activist and educator Saskia Gerhardy who, at the tender age of 23, is taking on some hefty competition to stand as the Labor candidate for the seat of Mayo in the forthcoming Federal Election.

Saskia has no illusions about the uphill battle she faces. She’s up against the well-entrenched Centre Alliance Member Rebekah Sharkie and is also running against a high profile and well-resourced Liberal candidate in Georgina Downer.

Saskia, who was born, raised and educated in the local region, says she’s ready for the election battle ahead and, if the noisy enthusiasm of today’s crowd is anything to go by, she already enjoys widespread support from the local community.

Saskia told those assembled that she is standing for Parliament to protect the community and environment that she knows intimately and loves dearly, and to ensure that future generations enjoy the same natural beauty and quality of life that previous generations have.

Senator Penny Wong was on hand to introduce Saskia Gerhardy, and spoke of her and the other young, idealistic candidates coming through as the future of the Labor Party.
