With the wheat harvesting season in full swing, we thought to republish a story from Coastal Views last year. Where we interviewed local contract farmer Wayne Sherrif as he was busy harvesting a large crop of hay in a field at the corner of How Rd and Quinlivan Road, Aldinga Beach.

We were intrigued to see such full-on agricultural activity taking place in the midst of suburbia, and were curious to learn more.

Wayne has been farming the area for many years, and has crops in place throughout the Fleurieu, including a crop of wheat due for harvesting just across Quinlivan Rd.

Wayne, however, feels that time may be running out for cropping activities in these particular paddocks.
Despite his best efforts, he’s running up against the concerns of local residents affected by the noise and dust created by his harvesting operations.

Wayne suspects the land in question will be subject to residential sub-division before too much longer.
Agriculture has played a huge role in the development of Aldinga Beach and the surrounding region, and Wayne Sherrif’s story shows how much the region is changing.

Coastal Views wish Wayne all the best for the future, and are grateful to him for taking the time to talk to us.
