Local Member Leon Bignell and Mayor of Onkaparinga City Erin Thompson were on hand to ceremonially cut the cake to celebrate the 17th Birthday of Willunga Farmers Market on Saturday 23rd February.

(The cake, by the way, was an absolute work of art lovingly prepared by students of Southern Vales Christian College.)

Leon paid tribute to the dedication, hard work and vision of the people, past and present, who have made the Willunga Farmers Market what it is today.

“The Market has changed the way the people of South Australia think about their food,” he said, “by bringing consumers and producers together.

“I love coming down to the markets and speaking to the farmers,” he said. “You get a real understanding of what our primary producers are going through, and the challenges they face.”

Also adding to the “buzz” of the day was the presence of celebrity chef Ainsley Harriott, who is currently producing a television series on farmers markets around the world. We heard reports that he puts Willunga Farmers Markets up there with the best of them.

The Aldinga Bay Residents Association wish to congratulate Willunga Farmers Market on their achievement, and wish them many more years of success.
