In 2018, the creative folk of Willunga came up with a quirky idea for a family-friendly FUNdraiser to support the redevelopment of their community-owned Recreation Park, The inaugural Willunga Jigsaw Competition was held on 19 May 2018, when 22 teams tackled the same 250-piece jigsaw. The winning team finished in the amazing time of 28 minutes, while some others toiled on until the 2-hour deadline.
This year we have planned to keep the same size jigsaw for those who want to compete in a more relaxed fashion, and, as before, they will have up to 2 hours to complete the puzzle. For the SA championship we are setting a higher hurdle, with a 500-piece puzzle that will hopefully be a tougher challenge for the keener puzzle experts.
Organisers have chosen definitive photos of Willunga to be featured on the puzzles. These will be run off on a 100-year-old press and kept under wraps until the day of the competition, which will be held in the Festival Hall Willunga. After feedback last year, the event will be held on Sunday afternoon 26 May 2019, rather than a Saturday night. The 250-piece competition will start at 1 pm and the 500-piece SA Jigsaw Team Championship will follow at about 3 pm.
Members of the public are invited to form teams of 4 people of any age to compete for a total prize pool of $500. First, second and third prizes will be awarded, thanks to sponsorship from Bendigo Bank. Organiser Brian Dempsey said, ‘Last year it was fascinating to see the mixture of approaches at our unique event. Edges first, allocated sections for each team member, collating colours or focussing on shapes – each team had their own strategies. I’m looking forward to seeing just how quickly those championship contenders can complete the 500-piece puzzle.’
Identical jigsaw puzzles will be presented, sealed up, to each table. The first table to complete the picture wins. With a maximum time limit of 2 hours, if no team finishes their puzzle within the allotted time, the one with the fewest loose pieces will win. All groups will be able to keep these limited edition Willunga-centric jigsaws for their future enjoyment at home.
Those who can’t find enough keen people to make up a table are invited to contact the organisers, who will coordinate mixed teams. Spectators are welcome to come along to support their favourite team and, in the process, make their contribution to the redevelopment of Willunga’s community-owned facilities. Afternoon tea will be available. In true Willunga style, this will be an afternoon of unique entertainment and plenty of fun. So do come along!
Cost: $20 per person for participants. Spectators welcome
